I use space heaters when available, energy star appliances, insulating curtains in the colder months, and even a ceiling fan run the counter clockwise can make a difference to push the rising heat down back into the room. During the day we use the natural sunlight to light the house. In the evening we move to the "main room", turn one lamp on, snuggle by the fire, under blankets and with each other in order to conserve energy.
