I'm so glad I discovered your blog through d*s! I live in North Carolina as well, and really enjoy reading your stories. We're military, and relatively new to the area, so I always love discovering new things to do in the area. Your piece on the Asheville Farmer's Market was wonderfully intriguing! I might just have to make the 4 hour drive one of these weekends. Thanks for sharing!

I love your blog -- I just saw your post at d*s and thought I'd pop on over. Congratulations! You've got me really intrigued about NC, so many amazing folks I know from SF are moving there right now!

Well once again your column was excellent. I love all the info and it is such easy reading. It might be SMALL MEASURES but it is LARGE in giving great directions and information. It is so inspiring ! It makes you want to run out and buy all you need to start canning!!! Love,MOM

hi ashley,
i am really digging your D*S posts.
i am now(along with my fellow) feeling especially inspired to step into the world of canning. i am definitely on a tight budget, but would like some suggestions for basic supplies. i know that you listed them in your article, but are some brands better than others? also what about buying an all inclusive kit? there are so many out there that it's a touch overwhelming. i now have visions of ball jars filled with ruby red roasted beets dancing in my head. thanks!!!

Hi Hallie! I'm particularly fond of any sort of jar that has a metal/platinum lid. Less granny, more modern, to this nit-picky aesthetite. So, along those lines, I like Ball jars in squat, square shapes (found at my local Target) and also small Ball jars with quilted glass (found at Lowe's!). Leifhiet jars come in a very cool shape and also have the platinum finish lids.
Amazon.com has a great website full of canning supplies on the cheap. Those starter kits can actually be quite helpful, as you consolidate shipping (if buying online) and get everything you need all at once.
Got get yer beat on!
