Barnheart (Humpday Giveaway!!!)

Ever had something you long for? Something you pine for so deeply it aches? An itch you just can't seem to scratch, no matter how hard you try? My buddy Jenna had that particular affliction something fierce. She had a desire so strong, a yearning so profound that she called it a disease, seemingly without cure. "Barnheart" was what she had, and a farm of her own was what she wanted.

In her new memoir, Jenna chronicles her journey of moving from one rental property in Idaho to another in a Vermont cabin. After a series of snafus left her yearning for a place of her own, she took an enormous leap of faith, secured a mortgage, and became the proud overseer of a stellar farm on 6 acres in Upstate New York.

Barnheart bears witness to Jenna's processes of becoming a shepherd to a small herd of sheep, a handler to her very own sheep dog, a gardener dealing with the inevitable triumphs and travails befalling such a pursuit, and so much more. For about a week in December, I would curl up in bed with Huxley at night and, as he drifted off to sleep, savor a chapter or more in Barnheart. It's the sort of read you want to draw out and linger with, to mull over and ruminate on.

To celebrate Barnheart, I'd like to give one fortunate small measure reader a copy of their own. To enter, simply tell me what your own longing is. What do you "hanker" for, as it's said here in the south? Me, I want an orchard on our property. Nothing massive, just a small orchard with a number of fruit and nut trees. I know we'll get there, eventually, but in the meantime, every time I walk or drive down by our lower field, I see my future orchard in my mind's eye and hanker for it. Big time.

So, what about you? Leave a comment telling me what thing, or place, or person stirs pangs of longing within you. I'll leave the giveaway open for a week (I'm thinking that Wednesdays will be the new standard small measure giveaway day, a sort of "Humpday Giveaway", to move us all sanely through the week's remainder), concluding midnight EST January 18th. Canadians, pine away, your longings are welcome here, too. Please leave a means of contacting you in your reply should you be the winner, either via an email address or a link back to your own blog or website.

Either way, winner or not, do check out Barnheart. Jenna has written a beautiful, sincere, heartening book, packed with inspiration. Whether you aspire to a farm of your own or not, her tale proves that whatever the heart wants, the heart wants and that, with perseverance, fortitude, courage, and sometimes a few tears, it can be had.

UPDATE: The winner of the Barnheart giveaway is lucky number 131, LJ of No Children, No Cry. Thank you SO much for your enthusiastic replies. I loved reading everyone's comments. Keep pining, folks. You'll make your dreams happen that way!

  1. Oh, goodness, I long for a little flock of chickens-- our place here is too small for them to live in comfort, but my own laying hens would be wonderful.

This looks like a lovely book.

  2. I'm yearning for a "bee sanctuary"... But in the most holistic sense, not focussed on mass production. I'm thinking 3-6+ acres of bee friendly plants, trees etc... Everything focussed on a healthy year-round diet for the bees. Ideally, with a cute old farmhouse, some chickens, dogs and cats and a nice big barn.

  3. I lust for 10 acres, some room to garden and have goats to make cheese......I currently live in Los Angeles but this dream will be a reality one day.

  4. I can't wait until my fiance and I have planned our small Raleigh wedding, found a home with enough space for us to grow vegetables and keep chickens, and start a family of our own. That's a tall order, isn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  5. I long for an old farmhouse, more (level) space to garden and livestock. Chickens, goats and a few horses would suit me just fine. I had the opportunity to horseback ride in Cane Creek last week and it was heavenly!

  6. I rent a sweet house in Seattle and recently had chickens in the backyard. When the landlord changed his mind I had to get rid of them in a rush. I long for a house of my own with enough room for chickens, bees, and a few goats. This year just might be my year.

  7. I just put this book on hold at the library. We are getting ready for our little flock of chickens in the spring!

  8. I pine for a mini-orchard in my backyard, with apples and sour cherries (I am a complete fiend for sour cherries). The apple trees will (hopefully) be planted this year, but I don't know when I'll be able to put in sour cherry trees - at $70 a pop, it's a bit of an expensive hankering.

  9. I want a walled backyard garden that is always lush and green, with plenty of room for sitting and chatting, and a glass-walled office for me to go into to write and enjoy the sunshine. And lemon trees.

  10. We long a place where we can take care of ourselves more. We yearn for chickens, beef we have raised ourselves, milk we have from our own cow and the land to raise all of them on. We would love to have enough to take care of our five children and their future families.

  11. I pine for a trio of goat girls and a healty hive of bees. I too suffer from barnheart!

  12. Timing couldn't be better for this ... my family just bought 25 acres in Virginia and come March we'll be moving from NJ to a tiny farmhouse (me, the hubs and my 2 kiddos) and growing my brother's small family farm business.

I'm hankering for it to be April already with my chickens in a moblie coop, the greenhouses up, and my new beginning already begun ...

  13. As a woman who grew up in Wisconsin, it's always been a dream to have a few Jerseys and goats on my very own dairy farm. There is nothing better than handmade cheese.

  14. Sometimes I am sure that I have too many longings. The big ones are: a farm/land to grow lots of food and homestead on a grander scale and also to make a living with my creative skills and passions. It seems all too much to ask, but I am going to keep working towards it.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Goats! I think I could be perfectly happy living in town all my life--with my chickens and perhaps some bees someday--but the no goats is eventually going to be a deal breaker for me.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I long for enough space...for a small greenhouse, a few hens...little aquaculture pond..a cutting garden with peonies, stone wall, wide steps, a koi pond...& one or more of my grandchildren growing to love the space as much as I do to help with the upkeep ;)

    ReplyDelete
  17. My yearning is to be able to profit off my land and be able to stay home and work my property for a living, rather than M-F heading off to work each day, wishing that I was home. The weekends don't leave enough time to spend around the property.

The Good Wife has mentioned more than once that she would go full time work so I could stay home, but we would have to work through a lot of details, including how our mortgage would be paid.

    Time will tell.

  18. I want to live near Russell Gibbs, so I can always have fresh local honey! And I'd love a farmhouse style home, with a huge kitchen, a comfy den with a fireplace, and enough land to have a few dozen animals. Not really much!

  19. Definitely want egg-laying hens and a few goats!

Suppose, I need to find the property for my dream homestead first...

  20. It's almost ridiculous how badly I want a dairy cow, a beautiful dark Canadienne, and the lifestyle that goes along with her: the stability of twice-daily milking, beautiful yellow butter on the table, fresh cream in my coffee, cheeses aging in the cellar. One day!

  21. I'm itching for a root cellar -- sexy, huh? Looks like a great book! Count me in.

  23. We moved into our gorgeous cabin/house toward the end of the growing season here in Alaska, and I really hanker for a garden plot and to fill up our greenhouse! We've had an unseasonable amount of snow, so it's difficult to picture a time when I'll be able to get my hands dirty.

  24. Oh my goodness I know exactly what I want. A small hobby farm. A place for goats and sheep, a dairy cow or two. A little garden. Bees and chickens. A stream and/or pond. A red wooden barn and a view over rolling pastures. That would be just right.

    ReplyDelete
  25. after years of city apt living, a small garden space...or a chicken coop. i like the idea of a root cellar too.

  26. Hmmm... so many things to dream of and work towards! I'd love to build a small, functional potager garden out in the backyard mixing veggies, herbs, fruit and flowers in a nice, peaceful space.

  27. Goats. A couple of mini goats for my small urban homestead is one of my heart's desires.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I long for a small greenhouse. That would be so wonderful.

  29. The list, she's long, chickens and more garden (coming). Enough of my own fruit to jam without purchase. And inevitably more room, pasture kind of room.

  30. I long for: a goat so that I may make goat cheese; a hot house so that I may grow tomatoes and can salsa; a sheep so that I may spin yarn to knit with; and a home with a fireplace so that I may curl up on winter's eve with a good book such as this.

  31. I so want to get back to Michigan, to the property I was raised on, and start a little hobby farm & animal rescue!

Living blocks away from the Gulf of Mexico, this soil won't grow anything & there's a 5 animal max.

  33. My longing is for a little homestead. First, a home to suit the property, a few fruit trees, some chickens, and a root cellar. I have read Jenna's book "Made from Scratch" and have read it several times, savoring it each time and always seem to focus on something different each time. I'm excited about her newest book!

  34. I would love to have room for chickens and my own bees. I had to give up my hive when I moved and I have missed having my own honey and pollinators. I will definitely be getting this book soon.

  37. Gosh, I have several. I think I would like to own and run a plant nursery. We could sell plants, bees, and chickens too since I want to try those two things as well.

I also REALLY want to travel to Europe one day and spend several months visiting all the castles and famous locations I have dreamed about all my life.

  41. We did something similar. Moved from the city in Texas to a 3 acre piece of land in rural Colorado. I'd love to read this book as the chronicles what we are going through, trying to get a bit garden set up on our land (all while managing an 18 mo old to boot!).

  42. My husband and I just moved to a place in the mountains of east Tennessee where we have about 2 acres of usable land (the other 1.5 acres are steep and brushy and act as a nice privacy barrier) -- I have begun to make a place for my garden, and we have begun to plant blueberry bushes and fruit trees, and my husband has built two bee hives to start up in the spring -- my longing is for this to become our little sustainable sanctuary, and I hope to have chickens and a greenhouse so that I can provide healthy food for my family year round right from our own land. I first started thinking about keeping chickens when I read Jenna's first book, Made from Scratch -- I've followed her since then and she has inspired me many times.

  44. I yearn for some good dirt and an inviting kitchen - the dirt for a garden, an orchard and pasture; a kitchen that is full of food from my land, made by my hands ... and a wood-burning stove. My husband wants this place to be next to the ocean (we're dreaming big here!) so he can try his hand at seafood farming.

  45. Oh! we just got our 3!! yes, only 3!! Baby chicks here today. It is snowing and 20 degress, but they are happily in our home with my chicken girl pining over them...I would love to have bees and a cow and well, pigs maybe too? But in a subdivision, chickens are a good beginning!

    ReplyDelete
  46. i pine to own the land we are living on. to have our own fence with our own goats. to have our own chickens. to have rainwater collection.... it's all a matter of time. but, this is what my heart aches for.

  47. While I have farming/gardening/etc longings, what I most long for is a child. I've wanted one for ever so long, as has my husband, but we know it would be best in the end if we finish college and I work just a bit first. I graduate this spring, so we are almost one step closer. :)

  61. I am moving to NC in 3 weeks, from NYC where I have lived and worked (a lot) for 16 years. What I want is very simple. A little vegetable garden, a porch and a dog.
My boyfriend lives in NC now and we talk of a ten year plan to have a small farm with chickens, goats and bees. But right now I just want to get up in the morning and walk the dog, sit on my porch and read a book and pick food from the garden to cook for supper.

  62. First I must say that I love your blog and read often.
Longing is something that has been happening here at our home in eastern Carolina and just gets stronger day by day. My longing is buying a house and small amount of land. A garden big enough to feed my family , chickens of our own for two reason , so i know the chickens are having a good life and i know happy chickens eggs are feeding my happy kids. More self sustainability. Than maybe adding a few angora bunnies and sheep for some yarn for this knitting mama.
Making sure my kiddos live knowing that some of the best rewards come from our two hands and doing it all with love.

  68. I would love to have enough room for horses. We had them when I was growing up, but then - as kids are want to do - I did actually grow up, and move to the big city (as big city as Utah can get), and decided that I just needed a small plot. And now, I yearn for a larger plot with a couple of beautiful geldings or mares who "nicker" at me when I come bearing apples from our tree. [Sigh]

  73. To be more self sufficient. To get my coop built and my chicks bought (ordered your book last week). To learn to care for my orchard correctly. For my Etsy shop to be successful. To raise my children to do all of the same.

  74. Along with some others, I've longed of donning a Beekeepers suit and heading out to a nice, neat little set of hives. Even though I live in the dead heat of Florida (in an apartment, no less) and have no bees in sight, I'm going to start a local course to become certified... so that one day.. I'll be able to put my knowledge to use! Along with the hives, I'm wanting either a Tiny House/Tumbleweed - or a home built underground... so that I can cultivate a pretty little garden on my "roof" and keep my home energized with solar panels. - To wrap it all up... I'm a bee-lovin', garden longing fool!

  108. To get off the grid again. I was off for 10 years, now I'm back on and I long to be untethered from the electric poles.

  109. We currently live on a double city lot where we raise chickens and ducks. We long to have a few acres where we can grow more food and add milking goats, bees, and a couple of pigs. Our eight year old daughter longs to have a proper barn with a horse and a couple of barn cats. Really we just want to live more sustainable and closer to the land.

  112. Thanks for the giveaway!

I long for bees, chickens, 2 goats and 5 acres for us all to roam!

  113. A house of my own. I feel like I rent only long enough to get a garden started. I have so many long range plans for my yard but only scratch the surface in a couple of years.

    ReplyDelete
  114. I'm definitely going to read this book, it seems like forever since I've been wanting to escape the city and move out where there is Space and Less Traffic and a Big Garden, Old Farmhouse and Chickens!!

  115. I long for some land of my own here around Asheville, or just a simple small yard of my own...so I can garden to my hearts delight and design living and growing spaces~ without any worries!

  116. I long for a few hens, a flock of sheep and a baby daughter to add to my three sons...that's not too much to ask for is it? Oh...And a front porch for our little farm house.

  117. I am yearning for a place of our own! A slightly bigger kitchen, a yard for a garden, some chickens, and a dog, (maybe some bees eventually). And a small barn to use as a space for beer brewing, canning, and pottery. We'll get there some day! I can't wait.

  121. I've been pining for a flock for some time. I think I'm almost there, I'm patiently waiting for spring.

  122. Well we have been longing for a farm for quite some time and actually have enough for a down payment to buy one. Still looking for the perfect one. For me though having a complete herb garden and the know how to use all of them would be wonderful.

  123. I've allllllways wanted a horse of my own and I would love to have chickens too. I'm going to try my hand at bees this year.

  124. I long for a thriving homestead with dairy goats, chickens, bees and a lush garden. We are moving to a farm in the spring to be caretakers of the property and have free reign. We are so excited to have the chance to make this dream a reality!!

  125. I long for a kitchen ceiling. Exciting, right? We bought this small hobby farm a few years ago, and the house has been a continual construction zone. I long for the day that we have real ceilings, walls and floors!

  126. We move frequently due to the seasonal nature of SO's work, and having a garden even for one season is what I yearn for!

  127. I'm dreaming of a compost toilet. There, I said it. Yeah, a compost toilet. I try to live sustainably by keeping chickens and bees and by growing and canning a lot of my food, but I'm still struggling with the whole idea of flushing clean, pure water down the drain numerous times each day.I'm hopeful that this will be the year that a compost toilet will begin taking up space in my home! I'd jut read about Barnheart earlier today, and now, here you are offering it as a giveaway. I'm taking that as a sign that it should be read.

  128. I long for a milk cow. An 80 year old man is teaching me to milk and care for cows. I get our milk from his cows and make our butter and yogurt. We left the busy life of Atlanta two years ago to live on this small farm. Chickens, goats and horses are making our lives more meaningful. My kids are learning so much about being self-sufficient with the garden my dad helps us create. But a cow is my dream.

  129. Sheep. I love sheep and want to have them in my life! I love reading Jenna's blog, and I can't wait to start the book.

    ReplyDelete
  130. My husband has (jokingly) prohibited me from reading Jenna's blog, because every time I do, I come crying to him wanting a tiny little farm of my own, with a simple house that is heated by a pellet stove, where I grind my coffee with a hand cranked grinder just like she does. I definitely have barnheart. No doubt about it!

  131. Though I would *love* a farm (and a beautiful old barn to fix up and live in), I don't think that will happen. So far now, I would love some bees for our urban dwelling....and several plots in the community garden!

thanks for the opportunity to win such a great looking book!

  132. I long for a front porch, facing east, where I can sit early in the morning with my coffee and my journal/sketchbook, before everyone else wakes up, and watch the sunrise over my fields of sunflowers and lavender.

  133. To live in a place long enough to properly set up a garden, have chickens, bees (and -- dreaming big here -- goats!). Nothing big, no farm out in the country (at least not yet), just a place with just enough room for my boyfriend, cats, and myself. Some small town where we can bike and walk to places when needed.
Oh, and also to have a job so I can have the means to partially support my homesteading habit.

  134. i yearn for a few acres of land in North Carolina...just like everyone else, I want a little space of heaven of my own, where I can have some chickens and honeybees

  135. In this season of life I find myself longing for all things familiar. The soft coat of our pup who left us too soon... her click-clacking on the tile floor, her warmth nestled at my feet, her sweet slobbery kisses. She's been a constant since the day we married and I miss her immensely. The memories of her and with her take me back to so many great adventures.

  136. I long for the hills or the wide open prairies. I usually get my hill/mountain fix in northeast Georgia, but have missed doing so this year.

  137. I've pined for a small cottage by the sea, ever since I visited Marin County, California for the first time. I loved watching cows graze on green hills right beside the pacific ocean.

It would fulfill my hermit dreams!

  138. So many things to try with our blessed property - but I think a row of blueberry bushes out back just past the chicken coop would be grand! Thanks for the giveaway opportunity!

  141. Oh how I long for my tomatoes to pull through in our greenhouse this year so we can enjoy tomato sauce all year long! Also, that the chicken coop is built before the apples blossom and that the baby fruit trees have a healthy and happy first summer in their new home! julie_lance@yahoo.com

  142. I have barn-heart too... I would love a farmyard full of chickens, horses, goats, pigs, bees... and a garden to grow my own food. For now I have to be content with 2 cats and a balcony garden in London! This book sounds reminiscent of The Dirty Life, which I loved!

  145. Jenna is one of the reasons I started homesteading, and she is also how I found your blog and your books. I have had barn heart ever since I read her first article in mother earth news, and I have been reading both her blog and yours everyday for a long time! I have a longing to be totally self sufficient, my hubby and I have lived in a camper for 3 yrs trying to save to build a home and start our homestead on our land. And I can't wait until the day we get to go that! By the way, I live in Hendersonville,NC not far from you!

  148. I pine for my own small farm! Specifically, a farm in Eastern Oregon would do. I visited there this summer and fell in love. Winters are rough and farming there would be difficult, but it could be done and I love a challenge! Honestly, though, I'd settle for a farm anywhere in Oregon or Montana.
